Timaru School Accessibility Analysis using GIS
Spatial Infrastructure Analysis with ArcGIS Pro
This project analyses school accessibility across Timaru suburbs using GIS spatial analysis techniques.
The objective was to identify areas with poor access to schools by analysing:
• Suburb boundaries
• Road infrastructure
• School locations
Tools Used
• ArcGIS Pro
• Spatial Join
• Buffer Analysis
• GIS Attribute Calculations
• Cartographic Visualisation
Step 1 — Project Setup
Goal: Identify suburbs in Timaru with low school accessibility based on proximity to schools and road infrastructure.
Tools: ArcGIS Pro (Buffer, Intersect, Spatial Join, Symbology, Layout)
Layers Loaded from LINZ and School from Ministry of Education Data Directory
School CSV is converted as an XY Point displaying longitude and latitude.

Timaru_Roads (lines)
Timaru_Schools (points)
Step 2 — Create School Buffers
Step 3 — Intersect Buffers with Suburbs
Step 4 — Road Density Analysis
Step 5 — Add Accessibility Score
Step 6 - Visualize Accessibility
Step 7 - Overlay Schools
Step 8 - Overlay Road Network
